Be Curious Weekend

Due to last minute enquiries the booking deadline has been extended to 11.55pm on Wednesday 1st May.

Be Curious Weekend on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th May 2019

Potential Plus UK’s Be Curious Weekend is an opportunity for children and parents/carers to explore a range of 1 hour activities together. Within the setting of Beaumanor Hall, a beautiful Victorian manor house with extensive grounds, families can take part in up to 8 diverse activities (4 each day) - from historical experiences to competitive constructions - whilst enjoying opportunities to simply catch up with Potential Plus UK old friends or spend time forging new friendships.

All Potential Plus UK weekends are also fundraising events for the charity. There are opportunities as you book to make donations (which can be enhanced through Gift Aid) and there will be a raffle over the weekend.

Age range

The organised activities are most suited to children aged 4-11 years but younger and older children are more than welcome to join in (providers are used to working with children aged 4-18 years). All children taking part in the main body of activities must be accompanied in these activities by an adult (18+).

*NEW: Please see below for our additional activity for the 12+ age group*

As the Be Curious Weekend is primarily suited for children aged 4+ years we can accept children (with parent/s and older sibling/s) aged 3 years and under (on 4th May 2019) at no charge. A parent should add a note on their 'Additional needs' that a younger child will be accompanying them and email events@potentialplusuk.org with this child's name and age, so that we can add details to the main register.

What is there to ‘Be Curious’ about?

There will be 10 activities available for families to enjoy. There is no need for you to book into activities ahead of the event. Time slots for these will be bookable on arrival and it is possible to enjoy all the activities across two days of attendance.

  • Land Buggies
  • Orienteering
  • Survival Skills
  • Iron Age Celts
  • Photo Trail

Descriptions of activities can be seen here.

Potential Plus UK are working in partnership with The Skills Builder Partnership aiming to build the essential skills which children and young people need for success. Our programme offers opportunities to help children and young people develop their abilities in the eight key areas (Teamwork, Leadership, Creativity, Problem Solving, Aiming High, Staying Positive, Listening, Presenting) and guidance on particular matches between activities and skills is provided. Further details on how to track and monitor against these skills will be available on the day.

*NEW: Sunday only: 12+ Activity*

YOUNG PERSON'S GUIDE TO JOURNALISM:  This one-day workshop will introduce young writers to the exciting and evolving world of journalism.  Fake news is rife and news moves at a faster pace than ever; this practical and fun workshop is designed to help youngsters think like journalists, analyse and critique the news and introduces basic writing, reporting, interviewing and editing skills. With Sharon Green and Sian Tower.

Sessions: 10.30am-12.30pm and 2.00-4.00pm. Participants need to attend for the whole day.

Children aged 12+ years may attend this session with or without a supervising adult on site. If adults attend with their child, they should purchase a ticket. If adults simply wish to stay on site and not participate with this child or with a younger child in the other activities, they can use the coffee lounge to wait in and do not need to purchase a ticket. Parents may also drop off their 12+ child but must leave contact details and be contactable throughout the day. Potential Plus UK does not have the volunteer capacity to be take responsibility for 12+ children attending this event, so parents must be confident that their child will remain on site and behave responsibly.

Children who sign up for this activity are also eligible to attend the main programme of events on the Saturday at no extra charge (as the main age range for Saturday's activities is 4-11 years). 12+ children must have a supervising adult with them for Saturday's activities and the adult must purchase a ticket for Saturday.

Venue, directions and parking

Beaumanor Hall, Woodhouse (near Loughborough), Leicestershire, LE12 8TX.

Directional information, a map and information about public transport can be found at www.beaumanorhall.co.uk/contact/ but please note that you should not contact the hall for information about the Be Curious Weekend, all enquiries should be directed to events@potentialplusuk.org.

There is a large car park at the hall at no charge. This is located on the right-hand side as you approach the hall from the main driveway.

Food and Refreshments

There will be tea, coffee and squash available all day, self-service.

We hope to have a coffee van on site that can provide more ‘exotic’ coffees and snacks.

Saturday and Sunday lunches

Lunch cannot be provided by our hosts on site but there are many places nearby where lunch can be purchased, or you are welcome to bring along a packed lunch. Details of where you can buy lunch are given below in 'Other places to eat'.

Other places to eat

The closest places to eat, at lunch time or in the evening are:

The Butler Henderson café, Woodhouse Road, Quorn, LE12 8AG

The Manor House, Woodhouse Road, Quorn, LE12 8AL

The Old Bulls House, Main Street, Woodhouse Eaves, LE12 8RZ

The Curzon Arms, Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves, LE12 8QZ

The Pear Tree Inn, Church Hill, Woodhouse Eaves, LE12 8RT

There are more cafes and restaurants in Quorn, 5 minutes drive away (suitable for lunch and dinner).

There is a retail site with a Subway, Costa and an Aldi 5 minutes drive away (LE11 2FF) and also a MacDonald’s further down the same road (suitable for lunchtime).

There are various chain restaurants in Loughborough a 10 minute drive away (suitable for dinner).

Be Prepared

Please consider that half of the activities will take place outdoors and in most cases this will be regardless of the weather and 'travel' between all activities will be across site and between buildings. We would recommend that you dress appropriately, wearing an outdoor type shoe and bring waterproof jackets.

The whole site is available for us to use and explore, although we will not be able to access the Main Hall building during the day time. All participants are free to wander around the open areas of the site between activities or during one of the activity times should you opt for an hour free-time rather than a workshop in order to simply spend some time with your family or catch up with a group of friends. The boundaries of the site are clear, but the site is not sealed, plus there may be other groups of people on site (there is a cream-tea happening in the Hall on Saturday and possible tours on Sunday), so children (under 12 years) must be supervised at all times and are the responsibility of their adult carer. Please do not attempt to exit the site other than by the main driveway – the site is boarded by a mixture of private residences and MOD land.

Cancellations and refunds

Places can be cancelled and refunds less 20% made up to 2 weeks before the event i.e. up to Friday 19th April. After that date Potential Plus UK will have confirmed the activities with the providers and committed to numbers. From Saturday 20th April places can be cancelled but no refunds are possible. If this is a concern we recommend that you take out insurance.

Accommodation

A limited number of cabins are available on site to stay in. These provide dormitory type sleeping accommodation for up to around 16 people, along with self-catering facilities, a living area and showers. These cost around £340 to hire per night and must be booked as a whole cabin. If you are interested in booking a cabin (perhaps a group of families wishing to stay together), please contact events@potentialplusuk.org as soon as possible.
